The St. Nicholas Parish Church
Prior to 1960, Canvey’s Anglican
place of worship was St Katherine’s Church, now the Heritage Centre in Long
Road. In 1957 the Church Council
decided that St Katherine’s Church was too small to cope with the needs of the
Island’s growing population – a larger, more central facility was needed.
The foundation stone for the new
church, St Nicholas’, was laid on 19th May 1960 and the contractors
were given 8 months to build the Church.
The building was completed, ready for its Consectration on 10 December
1960. The cost of construction was
£16,675 – a sum that was raised by the Church Council. (For comparison – in those days a
2-bedroon bungalow cost £2,250 In 1964 the Church Hall was built alongside the church, then in 1987
the two structures were joined together by means of the Family Centre,
completing the St Nicholas’ Centre as we know it today. Plans are currently underway to enhance
the facilities further, so that we can better meet the changing needs of the
community.
